Breathe

Breathe

Work type :

Breathe is a human ribcage made from stainless steel and assorted other materials, measuring approximately 32″ tall.  An electric motor in the base drives a system of chain-and-sprocket power transmission and causes the individual ribs to move.  The mechanically unique element in this piece is that two of the sprockets in that system are hand-made elliptical sprockets, and their function is to transform the constant rotary output of the motor into a “fast phase” of movement at the ribs, and a “slow phase.” This means that the action of the ribs very accurately mimics the movement of breathing, at least in its pacing.

This piece was sold to Driek Zirinsky, the president of the board of trustees of the Boise Art Museum in Boise, Idaho.
